John Kinder was born in New Zealand. His MA and PhD are from Victoria University of Wellington. After teaching at Victoria, James Cook University of North Queensland and Flinders University of South Australia, he moved to Perth in 1988. At the University of Western Australia, he is Chair of European Languages and Studies, Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning) of the School of Humanities, and was inaugural director of the Multimedia Centre. He has written Using Italian: a guide to contemporary usage (Cambridge UP) and CLIC: Culture and Language of Italy of CD-Rom (Interlinea). He is currently working on the history of the Italian language in Australia in the century before mass migration. In 2014 he was appointed Commendatore dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia by the Italian government.
