Frances Muecke was born in Adelaide in 1946 to parents who met while studying English literature at a WEA class. After schooling at Newcastle Girls' High, the Oxford High School for Girls and MacRobertson Girls' High in Melbourne, she obtained an honours degree in Classics from the University of Melbourne, Following her B Phil years at Oxford, she spent several months at the British School at Rome before taking up a lectureship in Latin at the University of Sydney in 1971. She has been visiting Fellow at Clare Hall Cambridge(1988) and the Institute of Classical Studies, London (2003) and held a visiting teaching position at Brown University (1994). She was a visiting Scholar at the American Academy in Rome in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2010. Apart from her parents the most important figures in her intellectual development were Prof Leslie Bodi, Margaret Hubbard, Eduard Fraenkel and Colin Macleod.
