We congratulate Fellow John Kinder of the University of Western Australia upon being elected as a Corresponding Member to Italy's L’Accademia della Crusca, announced on 5 November. The Accademia della Crusca is the oldest language academy in the world, founded in Florence in 1583. It is the most prestigious authority on the Italian language. This is the first time that a scholar from Australia, or in fact the southern hemisphere, has been elected to the Academy. You can read the Accademia's press release here (Italian only).

The International Union of Academies (Union Académique Internationale/UAI) at its 88th General Assembly at Brussels (24-28 May 2015) approved the adoption of Varieties of English in the Indo-Pacific Region as a new long term project of the Union. This new project is headed by Professor (Emeritus) Pam Peters FAHA of Macquarie University and by Professor Kate Burridge FAHA of Monash University. It is the first major project to be jointly sponsored by the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Royal Society of New Zealand.
