Biography
Monika Bednarek is a corpus-based discourse analyst whose research examines how language mediates social reality and subjective experience, harnessing the power of corpus linguistics (computer-based linguistic analysis) to do so. She is the founding director of the Sydney Corpus Lab, which aims to promote corpus linguistics in Australia. Her work identifies the linguistic resources that are employed in factual and fictional mass media to construct representations, discourses, and narratives about social life as well as how language is used to express ideologies, attitudes, and emotion. Monika has examined language use across diverse socially-significant contexts such as health conditions, environmental crises, and Australian national identity. Most recently, she has been examining multilingualism and the linguistic representation of minoritized groups on Australian television.
Monika has published widely in these areas, including authoring multiple books as well as co-editing several books and special issues of journals.
