Matthew Crawford

Biography

Matthew R. Crawford is a Professor at Australian Catholic University where he serves as Director of the Program in Biblical and Early Christian Studies in the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry. He completed his PhD at Durham University in 2013 in the History of Christianity, followed by an AHRC postdoc in New Testament Studies. Professor Crawford was the recipient of a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award from the Australian Research Council on the topic ‘Religious Belief and Social Cohesion’ and he has also held fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Dumbarton Oaks Museum and Library. His main research interests are the development of early Christian theology and biblical exegesis, the entanglement of imperial and ecclesiastical politics in late antiquity, and Christian engagement with wider Greco-Roman intellectual traditions. He has published two monographs with Oxford University Press and his most recent book is a translation of Cyril of Alexandria’s Against Julian which appeared in October 2025 with Cambridge University Press. His current project is a new edition and translation of the Emperor Julian’s treatise Against the Galileans.
