Ian Hesketh

Biography

Ian Hesketh is Associate Professor of History at the University of Queensland. He received a PhD in modern history from York University, Toronto, Canada in 2006 and held postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia, Queen’s University, and the University of Queensland. He has received research fellowships from the  Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Australian Research Council, including an ARC Future Fellowship. He is currently the Discipline Convenor of History at the University of Queensland and teaches courses on historiography, British history, and revolutions in history.

His research interests are in the history of science and intellectual history, and he has published widely on the history of Darwinism, the history of science and religion, and the history of large-scale forms of history. His recent books include A History of Big History (Cambridge, 2023), Victorian Jesus: J. R. Seeley, Religion, and the Cultural Significance of Anonymity (Toronto, 2017), and the edited collection, Imagining the Darwinian Revolution: Historical Narratives of Evolution from the Nineteenth Century to the Present (Pittsburgh, 2022).
