Biography

Ramon Lobato is Professor of Digital Media at Swinburne University of Technology. His work uses a range of empirical and critical methods to study the industrial transformation of video in the streaming age and its implications for audiences, broadcasters, and policymakers. He has held three Australian Research Council Fellowships including a Future Fellowship (2020-2025).

Ramon’s books include Shadow Economies of Cinema (BFI 2012), The Informal Media Economy (Polity 2015, with Thomas), Netflix Nations (NYU Press 2019), Streaming Video (NYU Press 2023, ed. with Lotz), and the forthcoming Hardware: Television and Consumer Electronics after the Smart TV (NYU Press). He co-edits the MIT Press book series Distribution Matters, which is dedicated to publishing innovative scholarship on media distribution and its socio-cultural impacts. Ramon has worked with partners including SBS, Department of Infrastructure (DITRDCA), and Screen Australia on various projects related to screen devices, industries, and audiences.
