Biography

Professor Maynard is one of Australia’s leading Indigenous scholars, whose research has revealed important aspects of our national past from an Indigenous perspective, including Aboriginal activism since the 1920s and its links to the international Black Diaspora; cultural and intimate relations between Aboriginal and settler Australians; and the involvement of Aboriginal people in sport and war. In addition to his scholarly achievements he is a prominent leader within the Aboriginal community as indicated by his leadership roles as Director, Purai Global Indigenous History Centre, Chair of Aboriginal History, and formerly Director of the Wollotuka Institute, at the University of Newcastle.
