Biography

Penny Gay graduated with Honours in English Language and Literature at Melbourne University in 1966. She then moved to Sydney University on a Teaching Fellowship, where she completed her MA (Honours) on E.M. Forster. Assisted by University of Sydney Travelling Scholarships, she wrote a PhD thesis at University College London on the Bloomsbury Group; the degree was awarded in 1975. She returned to Sydney University to take a lectureship in English, and subsequently specialised in drama and theatre history. She has published extensively on Shakespeare in performance and on Jane Austen, and currently holds an ARC Discovery grant to research women’s role’s in eighteenth-century drama.
