Biography

Isabel McBryde is internationally recognised for her pioneering contribution to the study of Australian prehistory. In 1960 her distinguished career as an archaeologist began as a lecturer in the Department of History at the University of New England where she eventually appointed Associate Professor. An appointment as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Prehistory and Anthropology in 1974 marked the beginning of a long association with the Australian National University (ANU), culminating in her appointment to the chair of Prehistory in 1986. Having retired in 1994, McBryde currently holds Honorary Visiting Fellowships at the ANU and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
