Biography

Alastair Pennycook is Professor of Language in Education at the University of Technology Sydney. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan at the University of Oslo. He was awarded the UTS Chancellor’s medal for Research excellence in 2012.

He is best known for his work on the global spread of English, critical applied linguistics and language as a local practice. Three of his books The Cultural Politics of English as an International Language, Global Englishes and Transcultural Flows, and Language and Mobility: Unexpected Places have been awarded the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Book Prize. His most recent book, with Emi Otsuji, is Metrolingualism: Language in the city (Routledge). He is currently working on books on Posthumanist Applied Linguistics (Routledge) and, with Sender Dovchin and Shaila Sultana on Popular culture, voice and linguistic diversity: Young adults on and offline (Palgrave Macmillan).
