Joanne Tompkins

Biography

Joanne Tompkins, retired from the University of Queensland, has held additional roles including a three-year secondment as Executive Director, Humanities and Creative Arts, at the Australian Research Council (ARC); terms on research excellence evaluations in Australia, the UK and Hong Kong; and a consultant on research strategy. Her research expertise lies in spatial theories and virtual reality; multicultural theories and drama; intercultural performance and feminist performance. She is the author of two monographs, four co-authored books, three edited books, and over 60 referred articles/chapters on post-colonial, multicultural, intercultural theatre, and spatial studies. She is co-editor of a book series for the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR), and the Australasian Drama Studies Association named an editing award in her honour. She is a founder of AusStage and involved in several digital humanities projects. She received an honorary doctorate from Queen Mary University of London. Ortelia, the company that emerged from her research, has recently been sold to an international entity.
