Biography

For many years Nikolas Coupland directed the Cardiff University Centre for Language and Communication Research, where he is now Emeritus Professor. He also holds Emeritus Professor affiliations at University of Technology Sydney, where he was Distinguished Professor of Sociolinguistics, and at Copenhagen University. He was founding editor, with Allan Bell, of the Journal of Sociolinguistics. His main areas of scholarship include language, style and performance; linguistic aspects of ageing; minority languages (particularly in relation to globalisation); and sociolinguistic change. He is also a Fellow of the (UK) Academy of Social Sciences.
