Professor Heather A. Horst is Professor and Director of the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University.

She is internationally renowned for her work in mobile media and communication and the everyday use of digital media and technology using ethnographic approaches. She has produced influential work on the use of digital media in transnational families and transformations in mobile telecommunications in the Caribbean and Pacific, including two documentaries on smartphone use in the Pacific. Professor Horst’s work has been featured in exhibits at the British Museum, the Smithsonian and other outlets.

Professor Horst has been the recipient of six Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery or Linkage grants and a range of national and international awards from funding bodies such as the EU Horizon 20/20, ABC International Development and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and others. She has served on the European Union Research Council SH-3 Panel (2017-Present) and a series of Executive Program Conference Committees. She is also an Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Digital Anthropology at University College London.
