Gillian K Russell

Biography

Gillian Russell is Professor of Philosophy at the Australian National University as well as a visiting Professorial Fellow in the Arché Resarch Center at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.  She specializes in logic, philosophy of language, and epistemology and has authored three monographs:  Truth in Virtue of Meaning:  A defence of the analytic/synthetic distinction (OUP 2008), Barriers to Entailment:  Hume’s Law and other limits on logical consequence (OUP 2023) and The Metaphysics of Logic, (forthcoming with Cambridge University Press.)    Her article “From Anti-exceptionalism to Feminist Logic” won the Philosophy of Science Association Prize for best work in Feminist Philosophy of Science in 2024.

Originally from the UK, Russell did her PhD (2004) in the philosophy department at Princeton University and taught at Washington University in St Louis and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, before joining the Australian philosophy scene in 2020.  She now lives in rural New South Wales with her partner, a small dog, and a mob of photogenic kangaroos.
