Biography
My current research interests include deserts, especially the Australian desert, in literature, art, photography & film; representations of science & scientists in literature and film, and Aboriginal astronomy. Monographs include: Seeking the Centre: The Australian Desert in Literature, Art and Film; From Faust to Strangelove: Representations of the Scientist in Western Literature; Tasmanian Visions: Landscapes in Writing, Art and Film; Desert: Nature and Culture. Co-authored books: Explorers of the Southern Sky; Science Under the Literary Microscope. Chapters in books include: ‘Travel Writing and the Desert’ in The Cambridge History of Travel Writing; ‘Uluru’ in Symbols of Australia; ‘The Alchemist on Fiction: The Master Narrative’, in The Public Image of Chemistry; ‘The Rise and Fall of the Mad Scientist in Film’ in Streitfall Evolution: Eine Kulturgeschichte.
