Tim Mehigan

Biography

Tim Mehigan, Professor of German in the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Queensland, was elected to the Academy of Humanities in 2003. He was awarded the Research Prize of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2013 and a Fulbright Senior Fellowship in 2017. He was Research Fellow in the Committee of Social Thought at the University of Chicago in 2017 and 2018 and has regularly visited the University of Bonn in Germany since 2013 as Humboldt Prize Winner. He has published widely on German literature and thought since 1780, with special reference to the intersection between literature and philosophy at “frame-break” moments around 1800 and around 1900. He has written several monographs on the Prussian dramatist, essayist and short story writer Heinrich von Kleist and on the Austrian modernist Robert Musil. Among recent publications are the co-edited volumes The Intellectual Landscape in the Works of J.M. Coetzee (Camden House, 2018), The Palgrave Handbook on the Philosophy of Friedrich Schiller (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) and Hermeneutics Between Berlin and Paris: The Search for Ethics (Mohr Siebeck, 2024). He is also provided, with Barry Empson, the first English translation of K.L. Reinhold’s philosophical treatise Essay on a New Theory of the Human Capacity for Representation (de Gruyter, 2011).
