Biography

John Poynter has been Professor Emeritus in the University of Melbourne since 1995. Earlier positions in the University include Dean of Trinity College, Ernest Scott Professor of History, Dean of Arts, Chairman of the Professorial Board, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Music, Visual and Performing Arts and Professorial Fellow in the Australia Centre. Publications include Russell Grimwade (1967), Society and Pauperism: English Ideas on Poor Relief 1795-1834 (1969), Mr Felton’s Bequests (2003), The Audacious Adventures of Dr Louis Laurence Smith (2014) and The Tarnished Swan and other Sardonic Pieces (2009).

Appointed Australian Secretary of the Rhodes Trust 1974-1997, he has published a history of the Scholarships in Australia and was made a Distinguished Friend of Oxford University in 2012.
