Biography

Born in Sydney and educated at the Universities of Sydney and Cambridge, Professor Wilson held research and teaching posts in the Universities of Cambridge and Warwick and a Tutorial Fellowship at New College, associated with a University Lectureship in Oxford University, before returning to take up the Chair of Classics at Sydney in 2003 (redesignated the William Ritchie Professorship in 2006). In 2009, Professor Wilson became the Inaugural Director of the Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies of Australia at Sydney University (now the Vere Gordon Childe Centre). In 2022, he was elected to a Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge and became a senior member of the Faculty of Classics at Cambridge University. He spends a term each year in Cambridge and is keen to foster exchange between the two centres.
