Sandra Wilson

Biography

Sandra Wilson is a major scholar of the political history of modern Japan. Her research focuses on the engagement of Japanese civil society with big political issues during the difficult middle decades of the twentieth-century the era of the Manchurian crisis, the slide into war and the recovery from defeat. Her work has a strong, implicit comparativist approach which resists assumptions of Japanese exceptionalism. Most notably, she is lead author of the recent Japanese War Criminals: the Politics of Justice after the Second World War (Columbia), which won the 2017 New South Wales Premier’s History Award (General History category).
