Biography

Professor Tim Winter is a leading voice in understanding how the past and present are mutually constituted. He considers how histories are constructed and reconstructed for public audiences and for diplomatic, geopolitical and nationalistic purposes. He has introduced the concept of geocultural power to the analysis of international affairs and has been at the forefront in the conceptual development of heritage diplomacy. His scholarship is characterised by its critical perspectives towards complex world issues, often focusing on developing, postcolonial or post-conflict societies. His current work explores current trends in cultural internationalism, as led by China through its so-called ‘revival’ of the Silk Roads for the twenty-first century, and the re-emergence of civilizational discourses via rising and middle powers across Eurasia.
