Gloria Davies

Biography

Gloria Davies studied at the Australian National University, where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Asian Studies in 1981. She completed her PhD in Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne in 1989. She taught at Victoria College (1987-1990) and then at Monash University (1991-2021), where she led and oversaw the development of the Chinese Studies program in the Faculty of Arts. She became an Emeritus Professor at Monash University in October 2021. She was a founding adjunct director of the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University from 2010 to 2015, and a member of the Centre’s Management Committee from 2016 to 2017. She co-founded the Centre’s China Story Yearbook series and was a regular contributor to this annual publication from its inception in 2012.

Her research ranges from Chinese intellectual and literary history through contemporary Chinese thought and public culture on the Chinese Internet to comparative literature and critical theory. She is also internationally regarded as a translator of Chinese scholarly writings and serves on the board of the international journal Pacific Affairs.
