Peter Riddell

Biography

Peter G. Riddell is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) and is currently affiliated as Professorial Research Associate in the Department of History at SOAS University of London; as Senior Research Fellow of the Australian College of Theology; and as Honorary Associate in the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sydney. He previously taught at the Australian National University, IPB University (Indonesia), SOAS, London School of Theology, and Melbourne School of Theology. He was invited as visiting professor at L’Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes/Sorbonne (Paris) in May/June, 2015.

Professor Riddell has published widely on the study of Southeast Asia, Islam and the history of Christian-Muslim Relations.  His books include Transferring a Tradition (Berkeley, 1990); Islam and the Malay-Indonesian World (London, Hawaii, and Singapore, 2001); Christians and Muslims (Leicester, 2004); and Malay Court Religion, Culture and Language: Interpreting the Qur’an in 17th Century Aceh (Leiden, 2017).  He has also edited 12 books and written over 100 scholarly articles and book chapters. In addition to English as his mother tongue, he has professional proficiency in all language skills in French and Indonesian/Malay and reading proficiency in Classical Arabic, Jawi Malay, Hebrew, Latin, and Dutch.
