Biography
Sally Young is Professor of Political Science at the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on Australian politics and media, including newspaper history, political communication and journalism studies. Her latest book is Paper Emperors: The Rise of Australia Newspaper Empires (UNSW Press, 2019). It was awarded the Colin Roderick Literary Award and the Australian Political Studies Association Henry Mayer Book Prize. It was long-listed for the Stella Prize.
Sally was previously the Coral Thomas Fellow at the State Library of NSW (2020-21) and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2014-17).She has written, co-authored or edited books on press photography, election reporting, political advertising and government communication, as well as more than 40 journal articles and conference papers. She is a regular media commentator and wrote a monthly column for The Age between 2013-15.
