Gregory Currie

Biography

Gregory Currie was educated at the London School of Economics and the University of California, Berkeley. He has held the position of Professor of Philosophy and Head of the School of Arts at Flinders University of South Australia as well as visiting positions at St John’s College, Oxford, Clare Hall, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, the Institute of Advanced Study, Australian National University, the University of Maryland and the University of St Andrews. He is a Past President of the Australasian Association of Philosophy.Professor Currie researches in the areas of the philosophy of art, literature and film and the philosophy of mind and language. He is currently undertaking a research project on the imagination concentrating on conceptual issues concerning the relation of imagination to belief and desire, to play and pretence, to fantasy and supposition; issues in cognitive science concerning mental simulation, development and psychopathology; imagination, empathy and moral learning. He is also working on a project on fictional and nonfictional narratives and the nature of documentary, narrative and time and understanding narrative.Professor Currie was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in July 2019.
