Katie Barclay

Biography

Katie Barclay is a historian with a particular specialisation in the History of Emotions, and its intersections with gender, and family life. Her work has been at the forefront of methodological developments in the ‘emotional turn’ within the context of historical research. She is especially interested in exploring how emotion operates to shape and as a social structure, and so emotion as a dynamic within power relationships. Her empirical research focuses on Europe, particularly Scotland and Ireland, and she has written on every century between the twelfth and the present day. Barclay is currently Head of Historical and Classical Studies and Co-Director of the Fay Gale Centre for Research in Gender at the University of Adelaide. From 20219-22, she was Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in the History of Emotions. Her first monograph won the Senior Hume Brown Prize in Scottish History and the Women’s History Network (UK) Book Prize; she has recently been the recipient of the Canadian Historical Association Neil Sutherland Prize and the Royal Historical Society David Berry Prize. From March 2023, she will hold an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at Macquarie University, Sydney.
