Lesley Johnson

Biography

Emeritus Professor Lesley Johnson was President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities 2011-14. Her fields of expertise include cultural studies, Australian cultural history, gender studies and sociology of education. She has published five major books, over 40 articles in major refereed journals and edited books, and a number of other reports and monographs.

In 1995 she became Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), a position she held for nine years, and in 2004 Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) at Griffith University, a position she held for just over five years until her retirement in 2009. Since that time, she has undertaken a number of part-time consultancies for a range of Australian universities and organisations such as the Queensland State Government and the New South Wales State Library.

Professor Johnson has served on a wide range of Australian Research Council committees since the early 1990s including as Member of its Council for three years and most recently the Engagement and Impact Steering Committee. She chaired the then AVCC Pro/Deputy-Vice Chancellor’s Committee in 2004.

She was awarded the status of Emeritus Professor by UTS in 2004, and Professor Emeritus by Griffith University in 2011. She was awarded an Order of Australia in 2010 for her contribution to Australian Higher Education.
