Lesley Johnson

Biography

Lesley Johnson worked in Australian universities for 33 years, commencing in 1976 as a Lecturer, then Reader, at the University of Melbourne, becoming a member of the senior executive of UTS as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) and then Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) of Griffith University, retiring in 2009. She was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH) in 1999 and appointed as Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in 2010. She was elected to the Council of the AAH in 2009 and as President of the Council for three years in 2011. She has written five major books, two co-authored, in Australian cultural history of the twentieth century and a significant number of articles in cultural studies, gender studies, sociology of education and urban history. She recently completed a major project on a history of the humanities in Australia, 1945 – 2000, funded by the Australian Research Council.
