Biography

Franz-Josef Deiters is an internationally recognized scholar. He read German Literature, Philosophy and Linguistics at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Germany) where, in 1997, he received his Dr. phil., and, in 2004, was awarded the Habilitation (Higher Doctorate). From 2006 to 2020 he taught German Studies at Monash University. In December 2020, he joined the University of Sydney as an Honorary Associate.

To date Deiters has published five single-authored books with internationally leading publishers such as Erich Schmidt Verlag (Berlin) and Rombach Verlag (Freiburg i.Br./Berlin/Vienna). Following the publication of the third and final volume of his major research project on the mediology of theatre (Die Entweltlichung der Bühne: Zur Mediologie des Theaters der klassischen Episteme, 2015; Verweltlichung der Bühne?: Zur Mediologie des Theaters der Moderne, 2019; Neues Welttheater? Zur Mediologie des Theaters der Neo-Avantgarden, 2022), Deiters has embarked on a new book project on ‘Germany discourses between the World Wars’, including chapters on authors such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Helmuth Plessner, Thomas Mann, and Erich von Kahler, amongst others.

In addition, his research areas range across the history of German literature and culture from the 18th century to the present, and the fields of literary and philosophical aesthetics.

Franz-Josef Deiters has held visiting appointments with the University of Sarajevo (2005), Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt/M (2006), and the University of Bergamo (2018). In 2020/21, he served as a DAAD Research Ambassador for Australia.

He is a co-editor both of Limbus: Australian Yearbook of German Literary and Cultural Studies (2008-2019: Rombach Verlag, since 2020: Rombach Wissenschaft (imprint of Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft), and the book series Transpositions: Australian Studies in German Literature, Philosophy and Culture (2010-2019: Röhrig Universitätsverlag, since 2020: Erich Schmidt Verlag). Moreover, he is a member of the editorial board of the book series vita activa (Wilhelm Fink Verlag/Brill Group Germany).

Franz-Josef Deiters has published widely on German literature, theatre, and the intersections of literature and philosophy. He has given conference papers and invited lectures at universities and academic societies in Australia, across Europe, and in the United States of America.

He is a member of several academic associations, including the German Studies Association of Australia (GSAA), the Internationale Vereinigung für Germanistik (IVG), the Goethe-Gesellschaft in Weimar, the Deutsche Schillergesellschaft, the Heinrich von Kleist-Gesellschaft, and the Hugo von Hofmannsthal-Gesellschaft.
