Susan Lawrence

Biography

Susan Lawrence taught at Flinders University from 1992-96 before joining the Archaeology Program at La Trobe University in 1997. From 1997 to 2004 she was Vice-President of the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology, and was President from 2004-07. As Past-President she has chaired the ASHA Awards Committee since 2007. She has served on the Archaeology Advisory Committee to the Heritage Council of Victoria since 2001 and from 2004 to 2007 was a member of the National Cultural Heritage Forum. She is on the editorial board of the journals Historical Archaeology, Australian Archaeology, Australasian Historical Archaeology, and Archaeological Heritage and is a member of the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology, the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology (UK), and the Council for North-Eastern Historical Archaeology (USA).

She is the author of more than 45 articles and chapters and several books, most recently An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 (Springer 2011) with Peter Davies. Other publications include Whalers and Free Men: Life on Tasmania’s Colonial Whaling Stations (2006) and Archaeologies of the British: Explorations of Identity in Great Britain and its Colonies 1600-1945 (2003). Her current research includes ARC-funded projects on urban archaeology, and landscape and water use during the Victorian gold rush.
