Biography

John Lee is an Honorary Associate in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney. He was a member of the Department of Greek (later Classics) at the same University from 1973 to 2001. His research focuses on Greek language, from early Classical to Koine Greek, especially the language of the Septuagint, the New Testament, Greek documentary texts, and lexicography. His major publications are A Lexical Study of the Septuagint Version of the Pentateuch (1983), A History of New Testament Lexicography (2003), and The Greek of the Pentateuch (OUP, 2018). John has been co-chair (2003–2005) of the Biblical Lexicography Section, Society of Biblical Literature and continues as a member of the Steering Committee. He has been a member of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (from 2005). He was Chairman of the Committee on the Translation of Liturgical Texts of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese from 1990 to 2014. In 2011–2012 he was the Grinfield Lecturer on the Septuagint at Oxford University. HIs most recent publication is Collected Essays on the Greek Bible and Greek Lexicography (Peeters, 2022). In 2024 he was awarded (by examination) the degree of Doctor of Divinity of the University of Cambridge.
