Biography

Mabel Lee PhD FAHA concurrently holds honorary professorial appointments at The University of Sydney and Hong Kong Metropolitan University. Her recent major publications include her edited volume Gao Xingjian’s Calling for a New Renaissance, co-translated with Yan Qian (2022), her co-edited volume Mabel Lee and Liu Jianmei, Gao Xingjian and Transmedia Aesthetics (2018), and her edited volume Shen Jiawei, Painting History: China’s Revolution in a Global Context (2018). Her recent research papers include “Aboriginal Australia and Zhou Xiaoping’s Transcultural Aesthetics,” Convergence: the Art of Zhou Xiaoping (2020), “On the Creative Aesthetics of Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian,” JOSA (2019), “Gao Xingjian’s Chan-Inspired Absurdist Aesthetics,” in Haun Saussy, ed., Texts and Transformations: Essays in Honor of the 75th Birthday of Victor H. Mair (2018), and “Word and Image: Gao Xingjian,” in Kirk A. Denton, ed., The Columbia Companion to Modern Chinese Literature (2016).
