Patrick McCaughey

Biography

Patrick McCaughey was born in Northern Ireland in 1943 and came to Australia in 1953. He was educated at Scotch College from 1954-60 and the University of Melbourne from 1961-66. Art Critic at The Age from 1967-69 and again from 1971-73, he was awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1969 and studied at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. He returned to the Australia as University Fellow in Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne from 1972-3 and was appointed Professor of Visual Arts at Monash University from 1974-81. In 1981 he became Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, a position he held until 1987. For the northern academic year 1986-7, he was Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard University. In 1988 he took up the appointment of Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1996 he was appointed Director of the Yale Center for British Art for a five-year term. He now lives and writes on the banks of the Quinnipiac River in New Haven.
