Biography
Michael joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1966 as a lecturer and became Professor of Armenian Studies and Gail Levin de Nur Professor of Religious Studies in 1980. He is now retired and lives in Jerusalem with his family.
He was founding President for 20 years, and now Life Honourary President of the Association Internationale des Etudes Armà niennes and founder of the Orion Center for Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Hebrew University. He is author of over 60 books and monographs in the fields of Armenian and Second Temple Jewish Studies.
He has been awarded prizes for his books on Armenian and Second Temple Studies and the Landau Prize for Contribution to the Humanities. He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Australian Humanities Academy, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, the Accademia Lombarda, the Academia Ambrosiana and Honourary Fellow of the Australian Humanities Academy, and others. He was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, Yerevan, Armenia (2018).
