Biography

A President of both the Australian Association of Philosophy, in 1983-4, and of the American Philosophical Association, in 2010-2011, Michael Tooley was born in Canada in 1941, and studied mathematics and physics, and then philosophy, at the University of  Toronto. After doing a Ph.D. at Princeton University, he taught at Stanford University, Wichita State University, the University of Miami, and the University of Western Australia. and he is currently a College Professor of Distinction at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was a Research Fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences of the Australian National University in 1974-80, and then a Senior Research Fellow in 1988-92. His principal areas of research are Metaphysics, Epistemology, Applied Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion.
