Biography

Andrew Pawley is Emeritus Professor in the School of Culture, History & Language in the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University (ANU). His main research interests are in the Austronesian and Papuan languages and associated cultures and in the nature of linguistic competence. Currently at the ANU he has taught at the Universities of Auckland, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and Georgetown. His current research projects include Proto Oceanic lexicon, Papuan comparative linguistics, Kalam language and ethnobiological studies, Wayan (Western Fijian) language studies, Tasmanian vernacular English and story-telling.
