Biography

Craig Reynolds is a historian of Southeast Asia whose major scholarship is on 19th and 20th century Thai intellectual and cultural history. Born and educated in the USA, he taught at the University of Sydney (1972-1991) and the Australian National University (1995-2007). He has held visiting appointments at Cornell University and the University of California-Berkeley. His first degree was in English literature, and his post-graduate studies included linguistics and art history.

He has published on the history of Thai Buddhism, Marxism, political culture, nationalism and national identity. He has a special interest in the lives of Thais up and down the social and political hierarchy. His scholarship has been translated into Chinese and Thai, most recently a collection of his essays, Letters from the Edge of the World: Thinking about the Past in the Present (Bangkok 2022). From 2009 to 2021 he was Chair, Asian Studies Editorial Committee, of ANU Press.
