Lecturer and subsequently Reader and Professor, the University of Melbourne, 1974-2007; Visiting Professor, Université de Paris XIII, 1996; Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, 1997-2002; Université de Toulouse 2 le Mirail, 2008.
Now Professor Emeritus, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, the University of Melbourne; Adjunct Professor; School of Historical and European Studies, La Trobe University; Fellow, Centre d’histoire culturelle, UFR des Lettres,  Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
