Biography

Educated Hartlepool Grammar School (1962), University of Liverpool, BA (1965), University College London, DipLib (1967) and University of Liverpool, MA (1974). Appointments include Assistant Librarian, Bodleian Library, Oxford (1967-76), Deputy Librarian ANU (1976-80), University Librarian ANU (1980-2002), Director Scholarly Information Strategies (2002-03) and Emeritus Fellow ANU (2004-). Convenor, National Scholarly Communication Forum (2000-17).
Honours/awards include Knight Cross Queen Isabella La Catolica, Spain (1984), Fellowship of the Australian Library and Information Association (1998), Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals UK (1998), Australian Centenary Medal (2003), Honorary Fellowship University House, ANU (2008).
Awards include the ANU Media Award – Biggest Public Lecture Seminar Series (2012), ANU Vice Chancellor’s Media Award for Improving Public Debate (2011), the ACT Writer’s Centre, Award for Non-fiction Book Reviewing (2012), Vice Chancellors Award for Advancing the Reputation of the University (2014), and the Chancellor’s Staff Excellence Award for Outstanding Service to the Campus Community (2017).
He is an author and editor of seven books including ‘English Interpreters of the Iberian New World’ (1975) and ‘Major Libraries of the World’ (1976). He has published over 100 articles (1970-2018) on scholarly communication, university libraries, and science fiction.
Chair, Australia Book Prize, Council of the Humanities and Social Sciences (2014-), Convenor, ANU Meet the Author events, (1986-) and Secretary, ACT Oxford Alumni Society, (1976-).
