Biography

Educated Camberwell Grammar School (1949), University of Melbourne BA (1952) and DipEd (1953), Durham University (UK) BA (Hons) (1960). Appointments include Senior Tutor in English, University of Melbourne (1961), Lecturer in English, (1962), Senior Lecturer in English (1967), Associate Professor of English (1974), Honorary Research Associate (1997), Honorary Senior Research Fellow (2000-current) at Monash University. Other positions include Monash University Ceremonial Organist (1989-current), Organist and Director of Music at St Aidan’s Uniting Church, North Balwyn (1984-current), co-editor of Organo Pleno, the magazine of the Society of Organists (Victoria)(2000-current). From 1986-94 he was an organiser, compere and performer in the annual organ concert series featuring the Grand Organ in Melbourne Town Hall. He was a member of the City of Melbourne’s first committee advising on the overhaul of the organ. He became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours for service to literary studies and organ and choral music.
