Biography

Born Wellington, New Zealand. Educated St Mark’s School, Wellington College, Victoria University College, and Massey Agricultural College. Plant breeder/residency at the New Zealand Department of Science and Industry (1948-66); ethnobotanist at the Bishop Museum, Hawaii (1966-80); Professorial Fellow, ANU (1980-86) and Professor of Prehistory ANU (1986-90, retired).
