Biography

Han Baltussen (PhD 1993 Utrecht University) is the W.W. Hughes Professor of Classics at the University of Adelaide. He has held fellowships at the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Institute of Classical Studies in London. He has held 3 ARC Discovery grants as Principal investigator (twice in collaboratoin with colleagues) and has published 10 books and many articles on Greek and Roman philosophy. Major publications include monographs on Greek philosophers (Theophrastus and the Neoplatonist Simplicius), Aristotle’s school, as well as the new edition and translation of Eunapius’ Lives of Philosophers and Sophists for the Loeb Classical Library series. Other publicatoins include four (c0)edited volumes on topics in intellectual history, in particular enduring questions around human responses to life’s caprices, such as grief, consolation, llove, censorship, and (in)tolerance.
