Biography

John Macarthur is Chair of Research of the School of Architecture at the University of Queensland. John graduated from the University of Queensland with Bachelor (Hons 1st) and Master of Design Studies degrees (1984) before taking a doctorate at the University of Cambridge (1989) where he studied with Joseph Rykwert and later with Mark Cousins while teaching design in the studio of Colin St J Wilson.His research on the intellectual history of architecture has focused on the relation of architecture and the visual arts, and has been supported by a number of ARC grants. He is a past President and a Life Member of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand. He was the founding Director and remains an active member of the ATCH (architecture theory criticism and history) Research Centre at UQ.

In 2021 John Macarthur was jointly awarded the Neville Quarry Architectural Education Prize by the Australian Institute of Architects.
