Biography

Anne-Marie Schwirtlich AM was Director-General of the National Library of Australia (2011-17), Chief Executive and State Librarian of the State Library of Victoria (2003-11) and Acting Director-General of the National Archives (2000-03). She has taught archives administration and published on aspects of managing collections.

Her PhD focused on the intersection of imperialism and women’s history exploring the experiences of British women widowed in India between 1860 and 1900. She has been a member of the Council of the ANU since 2017 and is Deputy Chair of Art Exhibitions Australia Limited.
