Biography

Julian Thomas researches the cultural and social aspects of new communications technologies. His work deals with problems including digital inclusion, media automation, piracy, and the historical evolutions of media, technology and cultural policy. He has been the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society since 2020. His books include Fashioning Intellectual Property: Advertising, Exhibition and the Press, 1789-1918 (2012), the Informal Media Economy (2015), Internet on the Outstation (2016), and Wi-Fi (2021).

Julian has also contributed to the development of open access research repositories in the humanities and social sciences, especially through the development of the APO website since 2002. He has advanced consumer interests in communications through his research, writing and advocacy, working with organisations including the Productivity Commission, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and Telstra. He is the current Chairperson of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network.
