Clara Tuite

Biography

Clara Tuite is one of Australia’s leading scholars of Romanticism, whose work is recognised for its comprehensive and nuanced engagement with the historical, cultural and social contexts of the early nineteenth century. She has a particular expertise in the work of Jane Austen and Lord Byron. Encompassing a range of dynamic critical practices and methodologies, such as the history of the literary institution, sexuality and affect studies, Clara’s work has been widely reviewed and praised both nationally and internationally. Her first monograph Romantic Austen: Sexual Politics and the Literary Canon was shortlisted for the MLA Prize for a First Book. Her second monograph Lord Byron and Scandalous Celebrity was awarded the Elma Dangerfield Prize by the International Association of Byron Societies. She is the recipient of four ARC Discovery grants and has held research fellowships at the Rockefeller Center; the Center for Urban Cultural History at the University of Massachusetts; and the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University. Clara is currently Associate Professor in the English and Theatre Studies program at the University of Melbourne and Vice President of the Australasian Association of Literature.
