Biography

Michael Haugh is one of Australia’s foremost researchers in pragmatics, the study of language in use. He is internationally known for expanding our understanding of interpersonal aspects of social interaction, including the role (im)politeness, offence, face, teasing and humour, and indirectness plays in the accomplishment of social relationships. He works with recordings and transcriptions of naturally occurring spoken interactions, as well as data from digitally-mediated forms of communications, across a number of languages, to discover the ways in which pragmatic phenomena have their distinct local flavours, both across and within languages and cultures. His research draws primarily from methods in conversational analysis and corpus pragmatics.

Michael has published widely as well as co-editing a number of books and special issues of journals. He is also the co-editor in Chief of the Journal of Pragmatics.
