Biography

Michael Keane is an Independent Scholar and Adjunct Professor of Chinese Media and Cultural Studies at QUT. His work has broken new ground in the area of television formats in China, cultural and creative industries in China, urban creative clusters, and online media and digital innovation in East Asia.

His current research examines the rise of China’s powerful internet communication companies and their internationalisation in the Asia-Pacific. He is co-editor of a book series with Anthem Press called Digital China and deputy editor of the journal Global Media and China (published by Communication University of China).

Michael speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese and is a regular keynote presenter at forums and conferences in China and East Asia. His work has been published in China, and he has, in turn, translated and published leading Chinese scholars’ work in English. He has been an Eastern Scholar at the Shanghai Theatre Academy (2011-13), a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Hong Kong Open University (2016-17), as well as holding several honorary advisory positions with Chinese universities.
