Vale Emeritus Professor Chris Mortensen FAHA 1945 – 2026

The Australian Academy of the Humanities acknowledges, with deep sadness, the death of Emeritus Professor Chris Mortensen FAHA.

One of Australia’s leading logicians and philosophers, he was elected to the Academy in 1996. A graduate at the University of Adelaide, Chris was appointed Lecturer in Philosophy in 1982 and was Hughes Professor of Philosophy between 1998–2005.

Recognised globally for his pioneering work in paraconsistent logic and inconsistent mathematics, Chris’ research interests were broad and deep and included relevant and modal logics, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of physics, cognitive science, and metaphysics.

We extend our sincere condolences to Chris’ family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

An obituary is being prepared by the Fellowship and will be available in due course.
