Vale Professor Wallace Kirsop FAHA 1933 – 2026

The Australian Academy of the Humanities acknowledges, with deep sadness, the death of Professor Wallace Kirsop FAHA.

One of Australia’s most eminent scholars in French Studies and in book-trade history, he was elected to the Academy in 1980.

Wallace taught French language and literature at Monash University from 1962 until 1998 and was appointed Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics upon retirement.

He was editor of the Australian Journal of French Studies from 1968 until 2002 and founding editor of the Institute for the Study of French-Australian Relations (ISFAR) journal Explorations from 1985 until 2008.

We extend our sincere condolences to Wallace’s family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
